When I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in Illustration from the California College of the Arts, Oakland/San Francisco at the end of 2006, I realized that although I enjoyed illustration in general, all my life I had been trying to incorporate animals or nature into my art. I found the Science Illustration program at the University of California, Santa Cruz extension not long after this realization. I applied, and to my surprise and delight, I found myself accepted within the limited class. My studies culminated in a three month long internship in Yosemite National Park in 2007 which allowed me to work first hand on projects with scientists and illustrations for an exhibit in the Mono Basin Visitor’s center.
My work spans a multitude of mediums and subjects from digital to traditional. My choice in subjects varies, and though I often lean towards mammals and extinct species in my own time, I am interested in anything from birds, to insects, to the processes of decomposition. I like to explore hidden worlds, like those in a clump of grass, or bring to people’s attention the lesser known animals that often get overlooked.
